Sesame Street Welcomes Julia. The New Muppet with Autism.
In an effort to educate young children about autism, Sesame Street launches the “See Amazing in All Children” campaign, with Julia, a muppet who has autism. Julia is the star of her own “digital storybook” called “We’re Amazing, 1,2,3” , which details her strengths and challenges she faces in a way that kids can relate and understand. The storybook shows how Julia is just like other kids, and explains how her friends can help her by making simple accommodations.
Sesame Street has been working with organizations such as Autism Speaks to help reduce the stigma associated with autism spectrum disorder. As Abby Cadabby explains, “Lots of kids have autism and that just means their brains work a little differently.” The See Amazing in All Children campaign seeks to let kids with autism know they are not alone, and for kids and families who don’t live with autism, they are learning about what autism is and how kids with autism aren’t that different from themselves.
